Makeup Charges for Family Members and Bridesmaids: What It Really Costs
Makeup charges for family members and bridesmaids are almost always priced per face, not per group — commonly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 each in Delhi NCRand a little less in Karnal or the tricity. Roughly a fifth to a third of the bride's rate with the same artist. Hair and draping are usually separate lines.
Nobody budgets for this. Brides budget carefully for themselves, and then two weeks before the wedding somebody counts the room — mother, two sisters, a bhabhi, three cousins who have flown in, the friend who is doing the jaimala — and the guest side of the makeup bill turns out to be larger than the bride's own.
So let's do the maths properly, early, while you can still change something.
What family and bridesmaid makeup costs per face
These are the ranges I see quoted around North India in 2026. They move with the artist's tier, the date, and how much is bundled in — treat them as a shape, not a price list.
| Who | Typical per-face range | What that usually buys |
|---|---|---|
| Mother of the bride | ₹4,000 – ₹9,000 | Longer, gentler base work on mature skin, softer finish, usually more time than a bridesmaid |
| Sisters / bridesmaids | ₹3,500 – ₹8,000 | Full party makeup, lashes usually included, 40–55 minutes a face |
| Extended family / cousins | ₹3,000 – ₹6,000 | Lighter application, often quoted at a group rate past four or five faces |
| Hair (per head, if separate) | ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 | Blow-dry and set, or a simple bun — extensions and heavy styling cost more |
| Saree / dupatta draping | ₹800 – ₹2,500 | Per drape — cheap on its own, expensive across ten people |
Smaller cities sit lower. Karnal family makeup usually starts nearer ₹2,500 a face; the Chandigarh tricity sits between Karnal and Gurgaon. The pattern I described in my Karnal bridal makeup cost guide holds here too — the gap between cities is real, but it narrows at the top of the market because premium products cost the same everywhere.
Why guest makeup isn't priced like bridal makeup
Brides sometimes ask why a bridesmaid costs a quarter of what they do when "it's the same face and the same brushes". Fair question. The honest answer is that it isn't the same job.
A bridal face carries a trial, a written plan, a colour test against the lehenga, roughly twenty minutes of skin prep, and a finish engineered to survive twelve hours of heat, hugging, crying and camera flash. A bridesmaid face is a beautiful 45-minute application that needs to last the evening and photograph well next to the bride without competing with her.
Different brief, different time on the chair, different price. What you should not accept is a guest look done with visibly cheaper products just because it is cheaper — the finish shows up in the same photographs.
The number nobody counts until it's too late
Sit down and write the actual list, function by function. It is almost never as short as you think.
- Wedding morning: mother, two sisters, one bhabhi — four faces before you even reach friends.
- Sangeet: the same four, plus the cousins who are performing, plus whoever decides at 6 p.m. that she wants her hair done.
- Mehndi and haldi: usually fewer, usually lighter, but rarely zero.
- Reception: the family shows up again, and the mother almost always wants a second look.
Four faces at ₹5,000, across three functions, is ₹60,000. That is a real number, and it is the one that surprises people. Better to see it now than to discover it in the last fortnight when there is no room left to negotiate.
What "per face" includes — and what it quietly doesn't
Before you multiply anything, find out exactly what one face buys. Ask for this in writing:
- Is hair included? This is the single biggest source of surprise bills. Makeup-only quotes are common and perfectly legitimate — you just need to know.
- Is draping included? Ten sarees is two hours of somebody's morning. Somebody is paying for that time.
- Are lashes included? Usually yes for party makeup, occasionally billed as an add-on.
- Who actually applies it? On a large family booking, guests are frequently done by an assistant while the lead artist stays with the bride. That is normal and fine — it should still be stated up front rather than discovered on the day.
- Is there a minimum booking? Some artists take family work only alongside a bridal booking, or set a minimum number of faces to justify the slot.
- Travel, parking and early-slot charges. These are billed once for the whole booking, not per face — make sure nobody is charging them twice.
My list of questions to ask a bridal makeup artist covers the bridal side of this; for family bookings, these six are the ones that decide the final invoice.
How many faces actually fit in the morning
Money is only half of it. The other half is time, and time is the thing that ruins wedding mornings.
One artist working alone does the bride in around 90 minutes to two hours, then roughly 40 to 55 minutes a guest. Do that arithmetic against a 4 a.m. muhurat and you will see why the bride plus five guests on one pair of hands is a fantasy. It needs a second artist, or the guests need to be done the previous evening, or someone gets rushed — and it is usually the bride, because she is scheduled first and everyone else is watching the clock.
I have written out a full hour-by-hour plan in my wedding day makeup timeline. Read it with your guest list in one hand. If the numbers don't fit, the fix is budget, not optimism.
Who pays, and how to settle it early
There is no convention, whatever anyone tells you. The pattern I see most across Delhi NCR and Punjab: the bride's family covers immediate family, and friends pay for their own if they want to be done professionally.
What matters is that it is decided and announced early — ideally when you confirm the booking, in the same WhatsApp group where everyone is already sharing outfit photos. Nobody should be discovering they owe ₹5,000 while sitting in a chair at 5 a.m. with wet hair. That conversation goes badly every single time.
If you need to trim, trim honestly:
- Prioritise the wedding day and reception for family; keep haldi and mehndi self-done.
- Ask for a group rate past four or five faces. Most artists have one; few advertise it.
- Book guests for one function, not all of them. Mother for every function, cousins for the sangeet only.
- Bundle it with the bridal booking rather than adding it two weeks out, when the artist has already sold the surrounding hours.
How I handle family bookings
I take a small number of weddings a month, and I work on the bride myself — that part is not negotiable, because the bridal face is the one that has to hold for twelve hours and survive every camera in the room. Family and bridesmaid work is quoted per face, in writing, alongside the bridal quote, so you see the whole number at once instead of in instalments.
I also plan the guest looks against the bride's, not separately. Same undertone logic, same product families, deliberately lighter intensity. A bridesmaid should look like the best version of herself standing next to a bride — not like a second bride, and not like she was done by a different studio in a different decade. That is a scheduling and colour decision made weeks before, not a rushed judgement at 6 a.m.
If you are working out numbers for a wedding around Delhi NCR, send me your function list and your headcount and I will send back an itemised quote — bride and family on the same sheet. WhatsApp me or use the contact form.
Frequently asked questions
How much do makeup artists charge for family members and bridesmaids?
Party makeup for family and bridesmaids is priced per face — generally a fifth to a third of the bride's rate with the same artist. In Delhi NCR and Gurgaon that commonly means roughly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 a face, and less in Karnal or the Chandigarh tricity. Ranges shift by artist, date and inclusions, so ask for an itemised quote before you multiply.
Is hair included in family makeup charges?
Often not. Many artists quote makeup only and price hair as a separate line, with saree or dupatta draping as a third. Ask which of the three you are being quoted for before you multiply by the number of guests — hair on eight faces is usually what blows the budget.
How many family members can one makeup artist do in a morning?
One artist working alone realistically manages the bride plus two or three guests before the schedule slips. Beyond that you need an assistant or a second artist. If someone promises the bride plus eight faces solo before a 10 a.m. phera, either the bride is being rushed or the morning is going to run late.
Who pays for bridesmaid and family makeup?
In most Indian weddings the bride's family covers immediate family — mother, sisters, sisters-in-law — and friends often pay for their own. There is no fixed rule. What matters is deciding it early and telling everyone, so nobody is negotiating rates in a hotel room at 5 a.m.
Should family makeup be booked with the same artist as the bride?
It helps. One artist or one team means the looks sit together in photographs, timings are coordinated once, and you have a single point of contact. A cheaper separate artist for guests can work, but you then own the scheduling and the risk of clashing finishes in the same frame.
