15 Questions to Ask Your Bridal Makeup Artist Before Booking

By Tanya Goyal·April 2026·7 min read

Before booking a bridal makeup artist, ask about their experience with your skin type, the exact products they use, whether a trial is included, how many weddings they do per day, and their cancellation policy. These 15 questions will help you find the right artist and avoid common mistakes that brides in Delhi NCR and Chandigarh regret later.

About Experience & Portfolio

1. How many bridal makeovers have you done?

Look for artists with at least 50+ bridal makeovers. Ask to see a portfolio of real brides, not just model shoots. Wedding makeup is fundamentally different from editorial work — it needs to last 12+ hours, look good in uncontrolled lighting, and survive tears and hugs.

2. Can I see brides with a similar skin tone to mine?

This is crucial. An artist might be brilliant with fair skin but inexperienced with dusky or olive undertones. Ask specifically for brides whose complexion resembles yours. If they can't show you any, that's a red flag.

3. Have you worked at my wedding venue before?

Every venue has different lighting. A skilled Delhi NCR artist knows that a farmhouse on the Gurgaon border has very different lighting than a five-star banquet hall in Central Delhi. Venue experience means fewer surprises.

About Products & Technique

4. Exactly which brands and products will you use on me?

Don't accept vague answers like "premium products." You want specific names: MAC, Charlotte Tilbury, Bobbi Brown, Huda Beauty, etc. If they hesitate or say "it depends," they may be using cheaper alternatives for some brides.

5. Do you offer HD, airbrush, or traditional makeup?

An experienced artist should be able to recommend the right technique for your skin type and venue. Read my complete comparison of HD vs Airbrush vs Traditional makeup →

6. How do you handle sensitive or acne-prone skin?

A good artist should ask about your skin concerns proactively and have a plan for allergies, acne, or sensitivities. They should know which products are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic.

7. How long will the makeup last?

For Indian weddings, you need 10-14 hours minimum. Ask what specific techniques they use to ensure longevity — primer selection, layering strategy, setting method. "It'll last all day" isn't an answer; "I use X primer, set with Y technique, and provide a Z touch-up kit" is.

About the Trial & Process

8. Do you offer a bridal makeup trial? Is it included in the price?

A trial is non-negotiable. Clarify whether it's included in the package or costs extra (typically ₹3,000-₹8,000 separately). The trial lets you test the look, check product compatibility, and build confidence.

9. What should I bring to the trial?

A great artist will tell you to bring: reference photos (Pinterest/Instagram), your wedding outfit reference or dupatta swatch, any jewellery you'll wear, and a list of skin concerns. If they don't ask for any of this, they're not planning a personalized look.

10. What time will you arrive on the wedding day?

The artist should arrive 30-60 minutes before the scheduled start time to set up properly. If they're rushing from another wedding, your look will suffer. Ask directly: "Will you be doing any other bride that day?"

About Logistics & Pricing

11. How many weddings do you take per day?

This is the question most brides forget to ask. If your artist is doing 3 weddings on the same day, you're getting a rushed job. The best artists limit themselves to 1-2 weddings per day, or even 2-3 per month.

12. What's included in the package price?

Get a complete breakdown: consultation, trial, wedding-day application, products, touch-up kit, hair styling, draping assistance. Ask specifically about any additional charges for product upgrades, early morning start times, or travel fees.

13. Do you travel? What are the travel charges?

If your wedding is in Gurgaon but the artist is based in South Delhi, clarify travel fees. For destination weddings, ask if travel and accommodation are included or charged separately.

14. What's your cancellation and refund policy?

Wedding dates change. Read the fine print before signing anything. Understand the advance payment terms, cancellation timeline, and what happens if the artist cancels on you (this does happen — always have a backup plan).

15. Will YOU personally do my makeup, or will it be a team member?

Many popular artists operate as studios. You might book "Famous MUA's Studio" but the actual application is done by a junior team member. If you're paying for a specific artist's skill, confirm in writing that they will personally do your bridal makeup.

Bonus: 3 Questions Smart Brides Ask

  • "Can I see your work in natural light?" — Studio lighting flatters everything. Real-world results matter more.
  • "What skincare should I start before the wedding?" — An artist who cares about your skin (not just selling a service) will give you a pre-wedding routine.
  • "What's your backup plan if you fall sick?" — Professional artists have a trusted backup artist arrangement.
